Special Olympic Team

For over 30 years, Special Olympics BC has been committed to enriching the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities and, in turn, the lives of their family members, friends and everyone they’ve touched.

Since their inception in 1980, that sense of purpose has not changed – nor will it ever.

Currently, Special Olympics BC provides high-quality sports programs and competitions that help people with intellectual disabilities celebrate personal achievement and gain confidence, skills and friendships. There are now more than 3,900 Special Olympics athletes participating in year-round programs in 55 communities around BC, supported by more than 2,900 dedicated volunteers. There are more than 50 local Northern athletes currently participating in a variety of summer and winter sports, all year round organized and supported by a team of dedicated parents and volunteers. New members are always welcome!

Thanks to a partnership with the Smithers Ski Club, 2012/2013 marked the return of the Special Olympics Alpine Program to Hudson Bay Mountain. Through this collaboration the program has had a hugely successful kick-off, and there is no doubt the momentum will continue to build well into the future.

Alpine skiing is an exciting winter sport that challenges athletes’ downhill racing ability and coordination while barreling down a mountain at speeds of up to 64 kilometres per hour.
